The honor was conferred on Friday, July 25 at a special luncheon
at the Glendale Hilton in Glendale, Calif. during the 34th Convention
of the Christian Educators Association International, on the occasion
of its 50th anniversary celebration.
Dyar, an English language arts instructor in the Cecil County Public
School System and an adjunct college instructor, was nominated by
her peers in a competition open to all teachers in public and private
schools. She was chosen by a CEAI committee from among nominees from
ten regions across the nation.
“The Christian Educator of the Year serves as a representative
and spokesperson for the profession, having demonstrably embodied
the best that the profession has to offer,” said Forrest L.
Turpen, CEAI Executive Director. “The Christian Educator of
the Year helps raise public and professional awareness of Christian
values and will represent Christian teachers at educational and religious
conventions for the next year.
The Christian Educator of the Year Award was jointly presented by
outgoing CEAI Executive Director Forrest Turpen and his successor,
Finn Laursen. Commending Dyar was the luncheon speaker, author and
recording artist Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic whose ministry
of encouragement has inspired millions.
Dyar holds several degrees including a B.S. in Biblical Studies
from Zion Christian College and Seminary, a B.S. in English and Secondary
Education, and M.Ed in reading from Frostberg State University. Her
specialty in public education has been 7th and 8th grades.
She is a curriculum writer who encourages
the presentation of Christian faith in the classroom as state laws
permit. “Teaching is not
just a job,” said Dyar. “It is a high calling that runs
soul deep. If I could do anything for my profession, it would be
to encourage more teachers to serve that calling through CEAI.”
