The CEAI National Educator of the Year

 

The honor was conferred on Friday, July 16 at a special luncheon in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. during the 35th National Convention of the Christian Educators Association International.

“Andy” Darlington, a high school English teacher in the Memphis-area Shelby County Public School System was nominated by her peers in a competition open to all teachers in public and private schools. She was chosen by a CEAI committee from among nominees from ten regions across the nation.

“The National Christian Educator of the Year serves as a representative and spokesperson for the profession, having demonstrably embodied the best that the profession has to offer,” said Finn Laursen, CEAI Executive Director. “The National Christian Educator of the Year helps raise public and professional awareness of Christian values and will represent Christian teachers at educational and religious events during the 2004-2005 school year.

The National Christian Educator of the Year Award was presented to Darlington by Laursen, Kimberly Dyar of Newark, Del., the 2003-2004 honoree, and Clara Ruffin of Hartford, Conn., the 1998-1999 recipient.

Darlington holds a B.A. in English and secondary education from Vanderbilt University, holds Secondary Education Certification from George Peabody College of Education, and has taken post graduate studies at State Technical Institute of Memphis, Liberty University, and University of Memphis. She has been teaching for 18 years and has been listed in Who’s Who Among American Educators for the last ten years. She is noted in the Memphis area for coaching and judging writing competitions, appears often on local TV, and is active in her church and charitable organizations.

“I encourage the presentation of Christian faith in the classroom as state laws permit, especially through Christian literature,” says Darlington. “Teaching is a high calling. I encourage more teachers to serve that calling as members of CEAI.”

Non-denominational, nonprofit Christian Educators Association International is a growing professional association headquartered in Pasadena, Calif. CEAI was founded in 1953, “to encourage, equip and empower Christians serving in public and private education.”
