The honor was conferred on Friday, July 16 at a
special luncheon in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. during the 35th National
Convention of the Christian Educators Association International.
Andy Darlington, a high school
English teacher in the Memphis-area Shelby County Public School
System was nominated by her peers in a competition open to all teachers
in public and private schools. She was chosen by a CEAI committee
from among nominees from ten regions across the nation.
The National Christian Educator of
the Year serves as a representative and spokesperson for the profession,
having demonstrably embodied the best that the profession has to
offer, said Finn Laursen, CEAI Executive Director. The
National Christian Educator of the Year helps raise public and professional
awareness of Christian values and will represent Christian teachers
at educational and religious events during the 2004-2005 school
year.
The National Christian Educator of the Year Award
was presented to Darlington by Laursen, Kimberly Dyar of Newark,
Del., the 2003-2004 honoree, and Clara Ruffin of Hartford, Conn.,
the 1998-1999 recipient.
Darlington holds a B.A. in English and secondary
education from Vanderbilt University, holds Secondary Education
Certification from George Peabody College of Education, and has
taken post graduate studies at State Technical Institute of Memphis,
Liberty University, and University of Memphis. She has been teaching
for 18 years and has been listed in Whos Who Among American
Educators for the last ten years. She is noted in the Memphis area
for coaching and judging writing competitions, appears often on
local TV, and is active in her church and charitable organizations.
I encourage the presentation of Christian
faith in the classroom as state laws permit, especially through
Christian literature, says Darlington. Teaching is a
high calling. I encourage more teachers to serve that calling as
members of CEAI.
Non-denominational, nonprofit Christian Educators
Association International is a growing professional association
headquartered in Pasadena, Calif. CEAI was founded in 1953, to
encourage, equip and empower Christians serving in public and private
education.
