The honor was conferred on Saturday, September 19 at a special luncheon in Kissimmee, Florida, at a special banquet during a three day Celebration of Educators in CEAI’s Southeast region. McGoogan is a public school fourth-grade teacher at Narcoosee Community School in St. Cloud who has been teaching for 12 years.
McGoogan spent forty years as a student, entertainer and teacher of dance before following her calling into public school education. “I graduated from college at the age of 56 and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime,” she said. “I became a teacher!”
McGoogan has received numerous other awards for excellence in education in the past, including the Disney National Elementary Teacher of the Year 2003 (American Teacher Award); the Disney Teacherific Special Judges Award, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2003; and Osceola County School District’s Teacher of the Year 1997.
“The National Christian Educator of the Year serves as a representative and spokesperson for Christians serving in public schools, having demonstrably embodied the best that the profession has to offer," said Laursen. “The National Christian Educator of the Year helps raise public and professional awareness of Christian values and will represent Christian teachers at educational and religious events throughout the 2005-2006 school year.”
“I realize now that God had been preparing me for this my whole life,” says McGoogan. “I also realize that, as much as I loved dancing and entertaining, it was teaching that He made my passion.”
