KNOW YOUR OPTIONS REGARDING UNION MEMBERSHIP IN FORCED UNION STATES!

Dear Christian Teacher:

The issue of union membership is a question that surfaces quite often in my discussions with educators. CEAI neither encourages nor discourages you from belonging to a teachers union because we believe that decision is yours alone to make. However, it is my role as CEAI’s Executive Director to provide members (and potential members) of our organization with information...the facts...options...so you can make an informed decision.

Since you live in one of 29 states that are not "right to work" states, the legal information you need to be aware of regarding union dues and membership is made more difficult because state law does not allow you freedom to choose or reject union representation. However, there are legal ways to avoid paying your money to union agendas with which you may have serious religious objections.

The enclosed brochure, "It’s Your Conscience," will give you the facts regarding your legal right to give your compulsory dues to a worthwhile charity. If you are interested in this option, read the brochure carefully and contact The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation at 1-800-336-3600 for further assistance.

We have another excellent brochure entitled, "It’s Your Money," which explains how to exercise your legal right to stop your dues from supporting political causes with which you may disagree. Usually this means you are reimbursed by the union about 30% of the total union dues for the year. If you are interested you can reach us by mail, e-mail, fax or phone to request this brochure, or other information about teachers unions.

PLEASE NOTE: It is important for you to realize that exercising either one of the above options does not give your employer or your union a legal right to discriminate against you in the terms of employment covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

It is my hope that whether or not you are a union member, you will seriously consider joining CEAI, an association that meets your professional needs while supporting and encouraging the Christian voice in public schools.
