BIBLE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS PROJECT
BThe Bible Literacy Project, Inc. is a non-partisan, non-profit endeavor to encourage and facilitate the academic study of the Bible in public schools. Founded in 2001 by Chuck Stetson, we believe that failure to teach about the Bible leaves students in ignorance and cultural illiteracy.

Our story begins with an amazingly successful new effort at peacemaking. Working with the Freedom Forum’s First Amendment Center, we produced The Bible & Public Schools: A First Amendment Guide, in which a broad range of organizations managed to agree on what the issues were—with regard to legality and basic fairness—for a school that chooses to include the Bible in its curriculum. Major educational organizations, including the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National School Boards Association endorsed the Guide; along with diverse religious and civil liberties groups.

More recently, we have traveled to Tennessee, North Carolina, and Oregon to train teachers in how to teach about the Bible appropriately in the public schools. In our training efforts we have collaborated with the leading minds in modern Biblical literary scholarship, including Prof. Robert Alter of the University of California at Berkeley, Prof. Tremper Longman of Westmont College, and Prof. Leland Ryken of Wheaton College. Many other eminent scholars are engaged in reviewing our teaching materials or serving on our Board of Advisors.

Today, the Bible Literacy Project is developing a groundbreaking new textbook on the Bible for public high schools that will be available in September 2005. For more information on our activities, please visit www.bibleliteracy.org.
