Armenia is a former USSR republic that re-emerged as a nation in the early 1990's. After the fall of the communist rule, the factories throughout Armenia were stripped of machinery leaving a nation without means of producing goods. Thus, there is great unemployment and a devastated economy.

With no money for maintenance, the schools are left in significant disrepair. The buildings are crumbling, windows are broken, and lack heat in the winter months, resulting in great physical need directly impacting school children. In some cases the schools are shut down, or have a limited school day of two hours. Also, school supplies are extremely limited to non-existent.

In spite of the obstacles, teachers and administrators are committed to serving children and willing to sacrifice for the sake of the students. The teachers earn from $3 to $12 per month, barely enough to pay for bread to eat during the month.

In the year 2001, Armenia will celebrate 1700 years of Christianity. In joining in their celebration, CEAI will supply Armenian Bibles to every student with whom we come in contact.
