BLOOD DONOR

Prayer: Dear Lord, please show me who needs me to sacrifice something for them today. I thank You for Your sacrifice for me. Please bring all my relatives, friends, and students to accept Jesus’ blood as payment for their sins.

Scripture: For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:28

As my surgery approached, the doctor advised me that I would probably need blood during or after my surgery. Since I have a somewhat rare blood type, A negative, I enlisted friends and even the group at my children’s school to pray for me and ask around for potential blood donors.

One afternoon I walked with a teacher discussing a connection she had at the blood bank to see if she might be able to help me search for donors. As we walked into her room, my daughter’s teacher, Mrs. Murphy, was waiting there for a meeting. “What are you talking about?” she asked. We explained my need. “Oh, sorry I cannot help you. I have rare blood – A negative,” she responded. We stood and stared at her in disbelief. “That is what I need!” I exclaimed. Mrs. Murphy looked at me with the sweetest expression and said, “You can have it all – every drop!”

My mind flashed to a moment before time, as God prepared to create earth and all its inhabitants. I imagined Him telling Christ that we would be given free will and therefore we would be sinful and in need of a Redeemer. I could almost hear God say, “Son, I am going to need some blood.” Christ immediately responded, “You can have it all – every drop!”  Of course, Mrs. Murphy’s blood would not cleanse my sins. However, even though her blood was not able to give me eternal life, she was willing and able to help extend my earthly life. Teachers I did not even know were willing to go donate blood for me. What a gift of love!

The challenge here has two parts. First, I want to encourage you to be an earthly blood donor. Extend the gift of life to others. Christ left His throne in glory to come to earth and suffer an excruciating death so that we might live forever, and Heaven’s gates opened wide as His blood was shed on the cross. The second challenge is for you to be a heavenly blood donor:  share the blood of Christ, the source of eternal life, with a dying world.
