ALL DRESSED UP
August 20, 2021

Prayer: Lord, help us to be “dressed and ready” to go when you call us. Amen.

Scripture: Be dressed and ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting… so that when He comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for Him. Luke 12:35

Music teachers play the June and Ward Cleavers of the teaching profession. Remember those television parents of the 50s who always dressed in their Sunday best, even when doing household chores? Watch the music teachers you know in their concert best. How many times before and during a concert will you find them dragging risers around, pushing pianos, setting up chairs, music stands, and percussion equipment?

Beginning band teachers notably keep repair kits ready, valve oil and cork grease in hand. Sometimes these artistic bullworkers will get on a yellow school bus in their finery and head out with 60 or more noisy children to perform for a local group and represent their schools. The glamour of “showtime” soon fades with all of this extra responsibility.

Are we as Christians “dressed and ready for service” when God calls us, or do we wear “casual and comfortable” attire (spiritually speaking)? Every day we need to stay awake and aware to hear and respond to God’s call to service, ready to go where He leads us. Would He find us “dressed and ready” if He were to come back for His church today?

Often we get so taken up with our busy lives that we forget that Jesus told us, “Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” Matt. 24: 42. We need to keep watching for our greatest curtain call ever, “dressed and ready” while we carry on our daily tasks.

  • Dr. Al Eads, Jr. says:

My son was the music instructor for a small rural district for 13 years before going into administration. I more fully appreciated the work of all music instructors as I observed his trials and tribulations as he served two elementary schools and one high school. Many hours in labor beyond the school day was a norm.
May God Bless all those who have educated our young in the Arts.
