FAITHFUL INTERCESSION FOR YOUR STUDENTS
August 18, 2021

Prayer: Lord, do not let me be unfaithful in prayer for those to whom You have given me charge. Let me diligently pray and intercede. Lead them to walk with You always. Amen.

Scripture: “Moreover, as for me [Samuel], far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you” I Samuel 12:23 NASB.

Samuel, a righteous man, followed God from his youth. Sadly, he watched the Israelites waiver in their loyalty to God. Nevertheless, he faithfully prayed for the Israelites as it would have been sinful for him to cease to pray for them (I Samuel 12:23).

In I Samuel 12, Samuel warns the people not to turn aside from worshipping, following, and serving God, because if they did, they “would go after futile things which cannot profit or deliver” (I Samuel 12:21). Rather, the Israelites needed to “fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all [their] heart” (I Samuel 12:24a). However, if they walked in wickedness, they would be “swept away” (I Samuel 12:25b).

Are you serious about prayer? Have you ever considered that not interceding for your students could be considered sinful?

Prayer makes a difference … but we can become so tired and disheartened in prayer. The disciples even fell asleep three times while Jesus was praying (Matthew 26:36-46)!

Here are a few tips for consistent, persistent prayer for your students:

  1. Walk your classroom. Touch or sit in every desk and pray for the children that sit in that desk. Too much? Pray for one row each day.
  2. Post your class lists in your home office or on your refrigerator. Systematically pray the list. Each time you pray for a child, place a checkmark next to the child’s name. Pray for every child weekly or monthly.
  3. Gather believers at your school, church, or home. Provide first names only and ask each person to pray weekly for a group of students on the list. Ask your prayer warriors to intercede according to Scripture. Pray that students would understand:
    1. They are loved by God (John 3:16).
    2. God wants them to have an abundant life (John 10:10).
    3. They are sinners (Romans 3:23), and if they confess their sins to God (I John 1:9), He will forgive them.
    4. Forgiveness of sin and eternal life is a free gift from God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).
    5. God wants them to fulfill His purposes for their lives, following the Good Shepherd (John 10:9-11).

Prayer requires discipline, but when you learn that one of your students has come to know Christ, it is worth it. Never give up praying for your students! Call others to join you. Like Samuel, awake to the role of faithful intercessor. Open your classroom door, enter the holy portal, and cry out for help. God is listening and wooing every child to a knowledge of Him.
