THE TEE SHIRT

Prayer: Lord, help me to see and respond in love to the needs of others, especially those that may be unspoken. Amen

She wrote me a thank-you note. “Remember how you always saved me a tee shirt?” I knew that she had recognized my act of love, even though I was surprised she mentioned it. Every month our school had a special assembly program that recognized and celebrated student learning. Tyesha was one of the principle players each month, part of the “staff.” “Staff” members got to wear special tee shirts. There were only a few large sizes among them, and I knew that Tyesha would need one of those, so I always grabbed one first and put it away where the other children couldn’t take it before she arrived.
Tyesha was quite obese for her young age, and I knew that she would be embarrassed if she couldn’t fit into any of the shirts. It was a simple thing for me to do for her, but it made a difference.
What students do you have with special needs? What kinds of things would embarrass them that you can help them avoid? Showing love sometimes is as simple as just being aware. Look for ways that you can make life a little easier or less stressful for your students. Even if they don’t ever mention it, they will notice your act of kindness.
