WALKING ON WATER
October 23, 2017

Prayer: Lord, please help us remember to keep our eyes upon You.

Scripture: “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt Matthew 14:29-31 NIV

If you have ever had to put together a school play or musical, you know this is an incredible task. Sets to build, costumes to sew, parts to assign, and so much more even before one note is sung.  As the date for the musical at our school drew nearer, it seemed to the untrained eye that the choir would not be ready in time. But to our choir director, Karen, all was on track. Karen was even strongly encouraged to push the date to later in the month so that there could be more time to rehearse, but as the director, she refused to change the date because she knew the plan and thought process of setting the date.

Karen told me that the date was set so that the choir would know the words, know their parts, know the songs well enough to get through the play as long as they kept their eyes on her. More practice might make them too self-confident and then they would not watch her for direction the night of the play. “Sounds like a devotion to me,” I said. God has set the dates for every opportunity to serve Him throughout our lives. He has prepared us along the way and when it comes time to “perform” we may think we are not ready, we may beg for more time, more training, but He has brought us to this place equipped just enough to do the job as long as we keep our eyes on Him, our Heavenly conductor.

In today’s verse we are reminded that Peter walked on water while his eyes were on Jesus. It was only when he looked away to see the wind that he began to sink. Have you been feeling a little stage fright over a part that God has prepared you for in His “Kingdom performance?”  Keep your eyes on Him – the show must go on!
