Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are perfect, and Jesus has told us to be perfect like You are. Help us to pursue perfection as we try to love others in Jesus’s name. Amen

Scripture: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous… Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:44-45, 48 NIV

You might look at Jesus’s command above and think “This must be some kind of joke.” We all know that only one perfect man walked this earth and it isn’t you or me. How then can we be perfect? Jesus tells us to love our enemies, and to love the unlovable. Every educator runs across an unlovable student some time in their career. How do you react to that student or to that peer that is just so hard to get along with or worse, speaks untruths about you behind your back? Loving the unlovable is no easy task. Pursue perfection, and be a shining example of God’s love to others. How can each of us carry out the attribute of being perfect in our daily environment (classroom, hallways, meetings, cafeteria, office, etc.)?

We have small instances where we act through the power of the Holy Spirit in perfect love toward others. We are completely broken and unable to be perfect as God is perfect on our own. We can only continue to strive to be like Jesus and rely on the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness. It helps me to remind myself that hard to love person is loved by God and Jesus died for them.
