Prayer: Let us listen and learn.  Let us grow and change to be like Jesus.

Scripture: Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble Proverbs 13:20 NLT

The teachers’ lounge in most schools can turn into one big gossip ring.  Sadly, but true, even those of us who call ourselves Christians get caught up in the act.  The saddest part of all is that when we do, others who once looked to us for advice and wisdom, decide we are no different than anyone else.  Good words become tainted with, “but did you know…”

Noah Webster, “We should say nothing of a person in his absence that we should be unwilling to say if he were present.”

Proverbs 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.”

Psalm 139:4 “There is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, You know it altogether.”

Yes, the teacher’s lounge mafia (as I termed it throughout my educational career) can be a source of antagonism but when used efficiently it can be a source for bonding and strengthening the faculty ties and the entire school culture. Throughout my 35 years as an administrator, I always tried to use it effectively by communicating with those who were there often as well as visiting ALL the classrooms regularly. That was difficult in a large high school but I still feel it can even be done in that setting.
Yes, I called upon our Father often to give me the right words to convey to the faculty and to make the decisions that were in the best interest of the students. Following my 35 years in administration, I spent 10 years training administrator aspirants and was fortunate enough that many of them have now become assistant principals or principals in many of the local school systems. I pray that God is leading each one to follow a path that nurtures their faculty and staff thus presenting a pleasant setting for learning to take place in the classrooms.
