GIVE OTHERS COMFORT
January 30, 2018

Prayer:  Lord, help us by your grace to be a comfort to others when they are troubled.

Scripture: He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us 2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT

When was the last time you sensed your own inner need for comforting? Perhaps in time of loss or disappointment you wished there was the ‘mommy’ or ‘daddy’ still around and willing just to hug you and speak softly in your ear, “there, there, dear one, it is going to be all right, you’ll see.” In all of our adult sophistication we don’t seem to get away from needing someone to comfort us from time to time. Even we who walk by faith in Christ our Savior, always trusting in Him, still have a need for a hug and encouragement from time to time. Paul reminded the believers at Corinth that God comforts us. He clarified that even in our troubles God comforts us. And, God’s purpose in comforting us is to show us how to comfort others when we perceive they are in need of a hug and a listening ear. The gift of ‘encouragement’ is a very precious gift to wield. And any one of us can receive that gift if we want to. We must be willing to let the power of Christ’s Spirit pass through us and out to others. When you feel the need of encouragement yourself, what a perfect time to prayerfully look about you for someone else to comfort. Be comforted this day and be a source of God’s comfort to someone else. Look around to see where you can aim that potent ‘comfort beam.’

“. . .lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other’s faults because of your love. Always keep yourselves united with the Holy Spirit and bind yourselves together with peace” (Eph. 4:1-3)
