ROOTED
April 18, 2018

Prayer: Lord, we pray today that You will send nourishment into our spirits that we may grow strong in You.

Scripture: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.Colossians 2:6-7 NIV

I usually enjoy the last few minutes of the evening news. I like the small stories that we might never hear about except that they are used to fill the last moments. One such story was the falling of the world’s largest oak tree. This mighty oak had grown strong and tall for many years, but a storm blew through and the tree fell over pulling its roots right out of the ground as it toppled. Upon inspection of the tree it was noted that the tree’s roots had stopped growing some years earlier and had begun to wither and rot. The tree could have easily withstood the storm if its roots had been as strong as the tree had appeared to be from the trunk up.

This tree reminds me of many people. They are notable, established, and appear to be strong or even invincible. Then one of life’s storms blows their way: marriage troubles, children making bad decisions, health issues, financial problems, or a career crisis.

There are many different situations that may attempt to uproot us. If we have not been faithful to stay rooted in Christ and to feed and nurture those roots, then we may be easily blown over when these storms arise in our lives. Daily prayer, praise, prayer, worship, Bible study and meetings will keep you rooted. Can you think of any others? Do you know of any areas in your life that may need a little “miracle grow?” How can each of us carry out the attribute of being rooted when the storms come in our daily environment (classroom, hallways, meetings, cafeteria, office, etc.)?
