THE PROMOTER
April 23, 2018

Prayer:  We need your help, O Lord, to show us how to share encouraging, hopeful and inspiring words.

Scripture: The wise in heart are called discerning and pleasant words promote Instruction. Proverbs 16:21 NIV

Educators compete with many distractions for student’s attention and time.  Think of some of the things that you have to compete with.  You also have to fight against preconceived self-concepts like the students who believe they are dumb or incapable of success or that they are too cool or already have all the answers.  So how do you promote instruction?

Today’s verse suggests a solution: pleasant words.  I hear stories almost every day about how an educator made a life-changing impact on someone’s life and the story usually involves some sort of pleasant words that said, “I believe in you,” “How about a fresh start,” “I know you will be a big success,” and so on.  Most people need to believe before they succeed and research tells us that we have to hear something several times to believe it and commit it to memory.  I challenge you this week to speak pleasant words to every one of your students that will promote instruction.  Try to repeat this several times, especially to the students with whom you have the most trouble.  Watch for changes in attitude and schoolwork, and then share them with each other over the next few meetings.

Do you recall any specific words spoken to you that encouraged you to be successful in school, or at least for one particular teacher?

How can each of us carry out the attribute of being a promoter in our daily environment (classroom, hallways, meetings, cafeteria, office, etc..)?
