YIELD

Scripture: “Now do not stiffen your neck like your fathers, but yield to the LORD and enter His sanctuary which He has consecrated forever, and serve the LORD your God that His burning anger may turn away from you. 2 Chronicles 30:8 NAS
What does a “Yield” sign mean to you? I have noticed that it means different things to different drivers. In some cases it means, “Slow down and give the right of way to those already driving in the lane you wish to merge into – even if you have to come to a complete stop and wait until the lane is clear if there is oncoming traffic.” To other drivers it seems to mean, “Hurry up and speed out into that lane before the oncoming traffic makes you wait.” Finally to a few others it means, “Ignore me totally because you and your time are much more valuable than all those other drivers, so who cares if they have to slam on breaks to avoid hitting you.”
In today’s verse, Hezekiah is warning all of Israel not to be stubborn and self-serving but to yield, or submit, to God. This is a relevant teaching to all people of all nations for all times. On the path of life, it is important for us to yield. We yield, or slow down, to see what is coming our way. We yield to avoid a collision or at least to avoid harm or suffering that might result from a quick or selfish decision. We yield to show God our submission, to make sure He goes ahead of us and that we are following Him down the path we should be traveling.
While you wait, you can anticipate the marvelous things God can do and will do when we release control to Him. Sometimes it is a short pause to check for safety; other times it is a long wait for our turn to proceed.
How well do you yield? Are you a patient driver or do you tend to be in a hurry everywhere you go? Are you more likely to be the driver who jumps out in front of traffic or the one who waits their turn? What causes you to hurry? On the road of life, would you say you rate closer to a yielder or the road rager?
