Prayer: Lord, may our faith and hope as Christian educators overflow into the lives of our students. In Jesus’ wonderful name, Amen.

Scripture: And you will be called by a new name which the mouth of the LORD will designate. Isaiah 62:2 NAS

James came to school in this T-shirt several times, and every time I saw it, I commented to him that I didn’t believe the message it gave—I CAN’T AND I WON’T. What mother would EVER allow her son to wear a statement like that, especially to school? In many ways, James lived up to that message. Overweight and under motivated, he suffered from a low self image.

What messages do we give children about themselves? Are they positive, encouraging, honoring messages? We send messages by “not so subtle” things like shirt labels but also by the way we include or exclude students from certain activities or by the selections we make for various tasks and responsibilities.

Every child needs someone to cheerlead for him. Parents usually do this effectively, but in addition, we as teachers need to use great care in ministering to the fragile self images of our students. Children form life direction by the messages they have heard and embraced about themselves during childhood, both positive and negative. Pray today that your teaching will empower those who sit before you to be great and to do great things.
