Prayer: Dear Lord, we declare today that You and You alone are our Source of life and joy and creativity and strength in the journey. Amen
Scripture: During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission. Although He was a son, He learned obedience from what He suffered, and once made perfect, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him. Hebrews 5:7-9 NIV
There we stood, my friend Teresa and I, in my driveway one morning with her car hood open trying to figure out why her car would not start. Now before you get too impressed, let me confess that neither one of us knows a thing about cars except how to put gas in them. As my grandfather used to say, “It was like a hog staring at a wristwatch.” I knew enough that, since there wasn’t even a “click” when she tried to start it, the battery was probably involved. The battery is the source for electricity changed into useful voltage for your vehicle. Miraculously, we discovered that one of the connectors had pulled out just slightly. We pushed it back in and tightened the nut and then the car started like it was supposed to.
For many of you, this may not seem like a big deal, but for me, it was a proud moment and, of course, a source of a devotional. I read a little about batteries and learned about how they are in a constant process of charge and discharge. As the current flows from and then back to the battery, it recharges.
Jesus left Heaven and came to Earth. He suffered much more than we can fathom. He cried and prayed over His impending death but obediently handed Himself over to be the only perfect sacrifice. He died and rose again on the third day. Forty days later, He ascended back to Heaven becoming our one and only Source for eternal salvation.
We must keep our connection to Him tight and secure. During times of suffering we must be careful not to pull away from Him, but learn from Him through our suffering. He is the source when we need to charge or be recharged, when we need to perform or rest.
